Yearly check reveals fifty-one violations at Air India
While the violations are not connected to last month’s Air India Boeing 787 crash that killed 260 people, they come at a time of increased scrutiny of the airline’s operations.
Seven of the findings were classified as “Level 1” — the most serious category under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. Level 1 findings indicate non-compliance that “lowers safety or seriously endangers safety” and may lead to immediate action, including suspension or revocation of the airline’s approvals.
Air India said it was “fully transparent” during the DGCA’s July audit and described the inspection as part of routine checks aimed at enhancing safety and operational systems. A spokesperson for the airline confirmed receipt of the findings and said a response, along with details of corrective actions taken, would be submitted to the regulator within the required timeframe.
In its broader audit, the DGCA flagged 263 safety issues across eight commercial airlines. Air India alone accounted for 44 Level 2 findings in addition to its seven Level 1 lapses. Other airlines also received various citations, including Alliance Air, Ghodawat Star, Quick Jet, IndiGo, and SpiceJet.
While the DGCA has not publicly disclosed details of Air India’s specific violations, a government report cited by Reuters points to issues such as inadequate pilot training, use of unapproved simulators, and poor scheduling practices.
Airlines found in violation are typically given up to three months to implement corrective measures. This deadline can be extended if the airline submits a satisfactory action plan that is approved by the DGCA.
