India Completes Landmark Test of Homegrown Air-to-Air Missile

(MENAFN) India successfully tested its homegrown ‘beyond visual range’ air-to-air missile, the Astra BVRAAM, on Friday, featuring an indigenous "radio frequency seeker," according to a defense ministry announcement.

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), in partnership with the Indian Air Force, executed the trial from a Su-30 Mk-I fighter jet near the Odisha coastline in eastern India, the statement confirmed.

The ministry detailed, “During the tests, two launches were carried out against high-speed unmanned aerial targets at different ranges, target aspects and launch platform conditions,” emphasizing that in both instances, the “missiles destroyed the targets with pin-point accuracy.”

“These successful flight tests have re-established the accuracy and reliable performance of the Astra weapon system with indigenous seeker,” the statement added.

According to the ministry, the Astra BVRAAM boasts a range of over 100 kilometers (62 miles) and integrates advanced guidance and navigation technology.

Highlighting the achievement, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh remarked, “successful testing of the missile with indigenous seeker is a major milestone in critical defence technology,” as quoted in the official release.

This latest test follows India’s recent string of successes, including four consecutive test flights of the army’s medium-range surface-to-air missile conducted over two days in April.
